Epic Portraits

How well should you expose your subject in a portrait shot?

The overcast weather made it difficult to master this shot. The sky was white and gray it was hard to capture the dark gray clouds. I was able to get some nice shots that show the concept of over and under exposed lighting. The over exposed photo has a white sky and the subject is dark. The under exposed shot captured the dark gray cloud and the subject is very dark. Once you master the settings of those two shots, you put them together with a speed light. The speed light allows the main subject to be focused and stand out while the background is well exposed. The third and final shot put the two exposed settings together creating good exposure and a speed light to light up your subject very nicely.

Over Exposed
Under Exposed
Same settings but add speed-light to light subject
